Try-it Tuesday – Gluten Free Pizza 2

So in a post last week I talked about a frozen gluten free pizza that was very tasty. This week I’m telling you my review of a mainstream gluten free pie.

We have pizza at our house almost every Friday night. It’s one night when we have a family meal and it’s just so special to me. Well this particular week (last week) we chose to order from Pizza Hut because they have a gluten free option.

Yep that’s right they use an Udi’s crust and well the toppings are still very much Pizza Hut. I ordered the meat lovers because meat!

So as you can tell from the picture the Crust is very thin and thus very crunchy. Not my favorite kind of Crust. If you are into thin crust already this pie is for you! If you like a hand tossed or even a NY style pie I’m afraid your enjoyment of this pie will be about like mine – seriously lacking.

So I guess the verdict is if you really want a gluten free pie and you are already ordering from Pizza Hut go for it. You will get the same sauce and toppings that you have always known and loved from The Hut! But if you are not a fan of thin or crunchy Crust I would suggest skipping this pie.

I know most of my reviews are very positive but I have quite a few gluten free friends following my blog so I really want to be honest above anything and tell you about my real experience and unfortunately sometimes that experience isn’t good.

How do you like your pie?

I made that! French Onion Soup

So I have been making bread lately and if you follow me on Instagram you will know it’s a thing for me right now I just can’t stop. A new loaf made every weekend. But with warm bread comes the thought of soup. We had a very cool Saturday and it felt like Soup weather. I had learned a while back that my husband’s favorite Soup was French onion. In searching for Soup to make this weekend I remembered I had a French bistro cook book and figured it would have something good! I of course found what I hope is an authentic recipe for onion soup.

I gathered my ingredients according to the recipe above and went to work.

After you have made your soup you have to assemble the dish. I didn’t have my ramekins (they are in storage) but I had some oven safe Pyrex.

I toasted the homemade potato garlic bread and then cut to fit the soup bowls and topped the whole thing with shredded Swiss cheese.

Now you are supposed to put this under the broiler until the cheese is brown and bubbly unfortunately these dishes aren’t safe for the broiler so I just put the oven up as high as safe for the cookware and watched it closely until the cheese was melted.

The soup was a hit and I got the seal of approval from both my guys. I will be making this dish again.

What did you make this weekend?

Friday Free For All

And here’s my rant for the week. I’m sure that many of you have heard about the “kids” that were not allowed to get on the plane because they were wearing leggings. Everyone, all over twitter and instagram and I’m assuming Facebook but I haven’t been on there browsing, was all up in arms about this airline telling these kids what they could and could not wear on a plane. Well then we hear the rest of the story, these kids were traveling free as guests of the airline based on employee passes that provided by the airline with some strict regulations as they are presenting the airline and expected to present themselves in a certain way. No here’s my thing. Why in the world did the woman who saw this happening and had no real idea of what was occurring think it was her place to put the incident on social media anyway? And why is the airline not allowed to place restrictions on their free perks for employees. We used to be able to do our own thing and not have everyone in the world have an opinion. Now you never know when someone is going to have an iPhone trigger finger just itching to get used. Rather then ask the girls if they were ok or find out more about the situation this person decided to just assume that something terrible was going on. So are we so terrible as a country that no matter the situation we just assume there is being an injustice and that as citizens we must complain about it or post about it on social media? The whole thing just baffled me. This person should have put their phone away and minded their own business.

Let’s remember people if someone is not physically being injured, if we are not in a position to truly assist another person we need to step back. Causing uproar when we don’t know the whole story can be far more damaging than just walking away from a situation that does not affect us in the slightest. Perhaps that sound cold but I’m pretty sure two girls wearing leggings in an airport while traveling with family is not a situation that I can do anything to assist. Now if this is a 4 year old traveling alone and she is scared I might step in, I might ask security to step in. But there is a big difference in being helpful and being a “poop stirrer”.

So having said that companies have every right to regulate how their perks are offered and make sure that the regulations they have attached are adhered to. My boss only let’s me wear jeans on Friday if I am wearing a company shirt. And while I may not always want to wear that shirt on Friday, I know that if I don’t I also can’t wear my jeans. And that is how it shall be until I own my own company and make the rules I want. But if that day never comes, I’ll keep wearing the company shirt so I can wear my jeans. And maybe next time those kids parents will make sure the read the guidelines and requirements a little more carefully to avoid such nonsense taking up space in my Twitter feed.

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend and get to wear whatever you want while you are doing it, and if you don’t get to wear whatever you want, well I hope there is a really good reason why you don’t.

Love,

Story-Telling Thursday The Intervention Chapter 2

“Where is she? Where is Britney?”

“Sir, please, I need you to calm down. Please spell her last name for me again.”

“Are you kidding me? I have already spelled it for you three times. It is Henson H-E-N-S-O-N. And my name is Anthony Jones J-O-N-E-S. I have the paperwork right here that give you permission to speak with me. She just came in from a car accident.”

“Yes I see here. Sir, she is currently with the doctors and I do not have an update for you. I will let them know that you are here and they will come and get you when they are ready for you.”

“I want to see her. I want to know that she is ok. I want to know what is going on.”

“I will ask someone to come out and speak with you just as soon as I can. Right now they are helping her. Please have a seat.”

Anthony walked away from the counter. He didn’t understand why no one would tell him what was going on. His was the last number dialed in her cell phone and was saved as her ‘in case of emergency’ number and they had called him to check about next of kin. The thoughts had instantly started running through his head. Why did they need next of kin? What exactly had happened to her? She had been fine this morning. She was not exactly speaking to him, but that wasn’t anything unusual. They had been fighting a lot lately, and they had been talking about needing space. But he didn’t mean it. At least he didn’t think he did. Not knowing if she was ok and not knowing if he was going to see her again had him more scared than he had ever been in his whole life. After he got the call about the accident he had grabbed their medical paperwork, neither of them had family close and they had appointed each other for medical decisions long ago.

He sat in a chair in the waiting room. He was surrounded by kids coughing and adults who looked drugged. He hated the hospital. He had not been in a hospital in years and had wanted to keep it that way. A sudden twinge of guilt crept over him as he thought that he had almost not answered the call on his cell phone when he saw the number. He thought it was her. He thought she was calling to continue their fight from earlier that morning and he just couldn’t fight anymore. He just wanted to be done. He wanted them to be able to love as they had loved in the beginning; back when she had needed him, and most importantly had wanted him. Now he didn’t know where he fit into her life. She had her friends, her work, and her dreams for the future that didn’t seem to include him when she talked about them. So where did he fit and did he even fit at all? He looked at the double doors behind the counter where he just stood and worried about what was happening and if he would see her face again. Maybe one more fight wouldn’t be so bad.

Who was he kidding? If she was ok, he wouldn’t ever fight with her again. He would just let her have the future she wanted and try to support her in any way he could. She was the love of his life.

Wedding Wednesday – First Look

There is a lot of controversy over the first look. Should you have one? Can you kiss? There are variables and opinions upon opinions to be had. My entire wedding party (well all the girls and my mom) were completely against it. But we held our ground and stayed firm to wanting to see each other before the ceremony. Our day had been kinda hectic and not going quite as planned before the first look and I think by the time we were to that moment in the timeline for the days events all we wanted was each other. We met in the garden at the Hermitage and even though it was fall it was still so beautiful. Here are some of our favorite pics from that moment and short period of time.

That collage above was all real moment. We were so happy to see each other we literally forgot the camera was there. We both enjoyed this moment together so very much. We still talk about it these 4 and a half months later. It was just powerful. Yes I realize there is the moment that the groom sees the bride when she’s walking down the aisle and it is magical but in our opinion this “first look” did not take away from that moment at all. And then of course we ended with some posed shots! Man this was really just the best day ever!

Try-It Tuesday Gluten Free Pizza

I have decided that I can not have Gluten. It makes me feel bad and my body just really is not happy when I have gluten. But herein lies a problem because some of my all time favorite foods are gluten bombs just waiting to happen. Let me just provide you with exhibit A: PIZZA. Now a glorious New York style pie (super large piece, thinner crust that can be folded with lots of cheese). Now in my home town of Nashville, TN there is not a lot of NY style pie to be found but pizza in general just does it for me. I get excited and happy and relish in every bite. So not being able to have gluten has created a problem for me. There are multiple large chains that have recognized this gluten phenomena and have responded in kind with gluten free crust options, I’m looking at you Pizza Hut and Papa Murphy’s. And their pizzas are good, I will do reviews for you one day for those specific companies but today I’m talking about the good ol frozen pizza. This is anther type of pizza all on it’s own. You get a frozen pizza and there are steps to ensure proper enjoyment. First you must have a dipping sauce. Sometimes that sauce is buffalo and sometimes that sauce is Ranch, sometimes it’s just plain ol Ketchup but it’s a requirement people and these companies know it.

Anyway, I wanted to find a gluten free option to keep one or two pies in the freezer for me, because there are some nights I have to have a solo dinner and some nights that my boys order a pizza and forget to order a gluten free one for me too. So I found this:

IMG_2884[1]

So if I’m not doing a pizza with all of the meat then this is my go to. Margherita. It’s just fun to say right? So I could  go into all the details about what’s in it and the nutritional information but that’s not why you come to this site. You come to my page to get the real scoop, the flavor scoop. So here’s a link to the company’s website with the specifics on this pie.

When I opened the package I was nervous to see what it might look like. It’s always scary when you try something for the first time isn’t it? Here’s how it looked.

I really loved seeing all the spices. It just makes me happy to see spices. Not sure if that’s normal or not but it’s the truth. So I put that bad boy in the oven. And waited what felt like forever but then the amazing smell of pizza started coming from the oven and then I waited too long because the cheese didn’t quite look melted so I think I may have cooked it too long but here is the result.

Slightly browner and crunchier than I would normally like but the flavor was there. Everything was tasty about this pizza. I could have probably used a little more cheese but I think that if I hadn’t let it get quite so brown I would have had plenty. All in all this was a great frozen pie and I would highly recommend giving this brand a try. The crust had a great flavor that was not cardboardish at all. And trust me not all gluten free pizza is created equal.

Mangia my darlings. Until next time.

New Finds – Prime Now Review

So you may not have heard about it but there is a service called PrimeNow. This service is home delivery of all kinds of things that you need including groceries and even of the perishable variety.

I convinced my husband we should try it. I wanted to make bread and we were out of eggs. So I loaded the app on my phone and started hunting for stuff. There was a $20 minimum order which to my understanding can vary by location. So I found things we needed including a case of water and then decided to throw in ice cream for good measure (let’s see how melted it is when it gets here)! My order was placed at 9am and I was given a window of delivery from 10-12. I went about my day and at 11 I had a notice my delivery driver Tom was on his way and I could even track his progress on the app. He arrived at 11:20 with my groceries.

I ordered eggs they were all in great shape not a crack and still cold. The case of water was delivered without a crack in it lol! The friendly delivery man sat the water just in the door for me. And the piece de la resistance the ice cream. It came in this package:

And when opened the container was cold very cold and this is how the ice cream looked.

The app also lets you go ahead and add a tip for the delivery person which is great. None of the groceries were a higher price then I would have paid in the store.  All in all this was a fantastic experience and one I would recommend.

If you have Amazon prime already this is a free service and I highly recommend giving it a shot.
